TOKYO March 14, 2008 - NAA (Nippon Aluminum Alkyls, Ltd. Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan) will increase the prices of the neat portion of its aluminum alkyl products by approximately 25 %, effective April 15, 2008, or as contracts allow. The prices for solvent blends of aluminum alkyls also will be increased to reflect higher solvent acquisition costs.
NAA president, Hiroaki Yamada said "Primary drivers for this price increase are significantly higher costs for safety and product stewardship. Also raw material costs are increasing such as for aluminum metal powder, aluminum chloride, naphtha, ethylene and energy. Furthermore, the costs of our industry-leading proactive product stewardship, logistics & handling and specialized transportation equipment investments are also increasing. This price increase is necessary to help recover these large cost increases and to allow NAA to continue to support our customers' global growth and to continue investing in the development of new products that our customers require."
NAA's product stewardship services include development, improvement and sharing of processes for handling aluminum alkyls and organo metals, including regular training seminars, safety shows and publications with many regional languages to educate chemical and pharmaceutical customers on the safe and effective transport and use of aluminum alkyls and organo metals.
NAA, a 50/50 JV between Albemarle Corporation and Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., is Asia's leading manufacturer and marketer of aluminum alkyl cocatalysts used in polyolefin production and chemical synthesis, as well as other organo metals for electronics, pharmaceuticals, agricultural, automotive and industrial products, and construction and packaging materials.

TOKYO\March 15, 2007 - NAA (Nippon Aluminum Alkyls, Ltd. Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan) will increase the prices of the neat portion of its aluminum alkyl products by approximately 30 %, effective May 1st, 2007, or as contracts allow. The prices for solvent blends of aluminum alkyls also will be increased to reflect higher solvent acquisition costs.
NAA president, Kazuo Takahashi said " Primary drivers for this price increase are significantly higher costs for aluminum metal powder, aluminum chloride, zinc chloride, naphtha, ethylene and energy. We have been assessed and verified to be in accordance with the requirements of the "Occupational Health and Safety Management System specification, "OHSAS18001:1999", together with the Osaka plant of our parent company, Mitsui Chemicals inc., and also its subsidiaries by Japan Chemical Quality Assurance, Ltd. (JCQA).
As the result, we successfully obtained the certificate of registration on June 21, 2004 as shown in the attached picture.
From now on, we will do our best to exterminate the occupational accidents or disasters by utilizing this management system and secure the supply of our products to customers.

In years past, Japanese Fire Service Law restricted the capacity of aluminum alkyls transportation tanks in Japan to a maximum of 1,900 liters.
On May 1, 2001, the fire service law was revised and the aforementioned limitation lifted. Since then, the 1,900-liter limit no longer applies to tanks approved by the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code.
Pursuant to this revision, ISO tanks (22m3) and Jumbo tanks (7.5m3) used for international transportation can also be used for transportation of aluminum alkyls in Japan.
As a result of these changes and in conjunction with Albemarle Corporation, one of our parent companies and the world's largest maker and marketer of merchant aluminum alkyls, we have constructed and started operation of a new loading/unloading facility for aluminum alkyls in ISO and Jumbo tanks.
The facility, opened in February 2003, allows us to ship aluminum alkyls in large tanks. Moreover, this new facility provides us with additional contingency plans in the unlikely event of severe plant trouble or other production stoppage. Albemarle Corporation will support us with emergency backup use of large tanks from the United States, ensuring you stronger supply security than ever.
For more information on aluminum alkyl products available in large tanks, or to purchase products in large tanks, please contact us.

As is well known and documented, aluminum alkyls react explosively with water, and ignite spontaneously and burn in contact with air. Because of the products' potential for hazard, aluminum alkyl fires can be difficult to control, and Japanese domestic law (Fire Service Law) strictly regulates the transportation, handling and storage of aluminum alkyls. The use of water, for example, has been strictly prohibited by Japanese fire authorities for extinguishing aluminum alkyl fires.
As a result of both the potential hazards of the product and regulations, one basic and effective fire control procedure for small-volume aluminum alkyls fires is to cut off contact with air by using a substance such as Vermiculite and/or a dry chemical fire-extinguishing agent. However, this process can be quite messy, and can lead to a long cleanup and recovery time after a fire.
Albemarle Corporation, one of our parent companies and the world's largest merchant aluminum alkyls manufacturer and marketer, has found an effective alternative to messy dry fire control methods currently in use. For several years now, Albemarle has been using water fog to control aluminum alkyl fire in their Pasadena, Texas plant in the United States.
In Albemarle's system, aluminum alkyls reacted with water fog without explosion, and the fire was extinguished quickly. The water fog system is also very effective at cooling down the surrounding area to minimize damage to the facility and facilitate quicker recovery from fire.
Based on the results in their own plant and in their customers' aluminum alkyl handling plants, Albemarle has equipped water fog extinguishing nozzles at all their plants and many customers' aluminum alkyl handling plants, as well.
As a result of Albemarle's work with water fog, the Tokyo Fire Fighting Authority (Tokyo, Japan) also experimented with water fog as an extinguisher for aluminum alkyls fires on January 31, 2003 at their fire fighting school in Tokyo. Nippon Aluminum Alkyls (NAA) cooperated with the fire authority by supplying aluminum alkyls, and by requesting to test the portable water fog nozzle we helped develop. (Please see the photograph of the experiment for reference.)
The experiment was a success, both in the eyes of the fire authority and NAA. The water fog system works well. However, extensive knowledge of the system, its installation, and maintenance is necessary for proper installation. Albemarle Corporation has such extensive knowledge and is happy to work with you if you have interest in this system.(*)

For detailed results of the fire authority experiment, please contact the Tokyo Fire Fighting Authority (Tokyo, Japan). For more information on the water fog system, equipment, installation and maintenance, contact Albemarle Corporation or Nippon Aluminum Alkyls.
(*) You are required to follow local fire fighting regulations for your location. Some countries may prohibit use of water fog systems. Please consult with the local fire-fighting agency in your country for applicable regulations.
